    OAK HARBOR, Wash. (April 2, 2018) A P-8A Poseidon aircraft attached to Patrol Squadron (VP) 4 takes off from Naval Air Station Whidbey Island to conduct a regularly scheduled deployment in the U.S. 7th Fleet area of operations. VP-4 is a maritime patrol and reconnaissance squadron assigned to Patrol and Reconnaissance Wing 10 and this occasion marks both VP-4 and Wing 10's first P-8A deployment following VP-4's platform transition from the P-3C Orion to the P-8A Poseidon aircraft between Sept. 2016 to May 2017.     The USS Ralph Johnson (DDG 114), named for a Vietnam Marine Corps hero, was commissioned March 24 in Charleston, South Carolina.  Read about the new ship and its namesake  HERE.  It includes video of the commissioning ceremony.

    USCGC Polar Star arrived at its Seattle homeport Friday, March 16, after a 107-day mission to support resupply of McMurdo Station, Antarctica.  At least the crew got liberty in Fiji on the way back!

Gary Mayes presents the 2018 Navy Installation Excellence Award pennant to Command Master Chief Shane Cardon and Capt. Geoffrey Moore, commanding officer of Naval Air Station (NAS) Whidbey Island, during an all hands call at the base chapel on Whidbey Island. The Navy's installation excellence award program recognizes the top three large and top three small installations based upon performance within the command's strategic goals and also fitting the criteria established by the Office of the Secretary of Defense, with NAS Whidbey Island winning the large installation recognition for its second time now.
