President's Letter
January 2011
It’s hard to believe that 2010, and our first "decade of achievement",
is about to end… "time does fly by". The Lake Washington Council is
concluding another very successful year. In 2010 we hosted a number of
dinner events and tours, including a dinner in June that we co-hosted
with the Everett Council. Of note, our Summer dinner, held at the Don
James Center on the University of Washington campus, and our November
dinner where our Keynote Speaker, Captain Anne Ewalt, Chief of Staff for
13th CG District spoke on "Women’s Careers in the Coast Guard". As a
part of her presentation Captain Ewalt included LT(jg) Katie Thompson,
Commanding Officer of the CG Cutter Blue Shark… all in all, a very
unique perspective of "military life", in this case in the US Coast
Guard.
In September we hosted our Third Coast Guard Ball which was attracted
over 275 attendees including Coast Guard active duty, Reserve, retired
and auxiliary members, civilian employees and members of the other
services. Coast Guard Chief of Staff Vice Admiral John P. Currier was
the event’s keynote Speaker and the Thirteenth District’s current
Commander, Rear Admiral Gary Blore also spoke. Vice Admiral Currier
presented Council member Roger Ponto the Coast Guard’s "Distinguished
Public Service Award" which cited his "many years of outstanding support
of the Coast Guard through his leadership in the Navy League", and his
"continuous and tireless commitment to plan and execute three (2007,
2008 and 2010) Pacific Northwest Coast Guard Galas". So… a big
"congratulations" to Roger for his past and ongoing support of LWC.
Looking forward, we have a vibrant and active Board of Director…
individuals who will take the Lake Washington Council to new heights of
excellence in 2011 and beyond. There will be a continued focus on Dinner
Events that will include a variety of speakers who will talk on a number
of unique and "out of the box" topics. We will expand the number and
types of tours (both military bases and support businesses) and we will
communicate that information through a revised and enhanced website and
our newsletter, "The Voyager". In addition, we will continue to work
with two affiliate organization, Hire America’s Heroes (HAH) and the
Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR). And a final focus,
actively growing our membership by obtaining new Corporate Sponsors.
Community Affiliates and individual members.
In summary, 2010 has been a successful year and coming year will be even
better… we look forward to your active participation in our Council’s
events and activities in 2011.

President, Lake Washington Council NLUS
