On June 8, 1967, The USS Liberty (AGTR5), was attacked by armed forces of the State of Israel in international waters in the eastern Mediterranean Sea. Thirty-four men died and 172 were wounded. The ship was so seriously damaged that it had to be scrapped.
The attack has been a matter of controversy ever since. Israel claims that the attack was a case of mistaken identify; survivors, supported by many senior US government and Navy officials, maintain that the attack was deliberately committed in order to keep the US from collecting intelligence about the Six Day War, then in its fourth day.
Fifteen members of the Lake Washington Council represent the USS Liberty Veterans Association. Three more members are from families of USS Liberty survivors.
